2022 Trend Forecast

Another year behind us and another fresh set of design trends for us to swoon over. With each new trend that comes into view, there comes a quandary: which trends do will have staying power, and which will fade away with another trip around the sun. Lucky for you, we have spent the time to go over some of the up-and-coming trends that are worth taking a look at and potentially bringing into your home. The trends outlined below are styles and designs that have been around before, but now we are seeing them in a new, modern way. It’s true what they say: an old dog can learn new tricks.

Skirted Sinks

With the slow decline of the clean cut Scandinavian style of interiors and the embrace of the grand millennial style over the last few years, it brings with it not only lush wall coverings and kitschy knick-knacks, but the skirted sink as well. The skirted sink for most will bring ideas of cottages dotting the English countryside, but this old gal has a new look.

The skirted sink can instantly add a style and warmth to ordinary spaces like your powder room, laundry or even dressing up your wet bar. You can update this tried-and-true design style by choosing elevated, fun fabrics that compliment the space and (if you’re feeling bold!) takes a design risk.

Take a look at our examples and decide for yourself. Will you be adding skirting to your cabinetry and sinks this year?

Craftsmanship

We hear about “Fast Fashion” all the time, but in the design world we do a lot of thinking about “Fast Furniture". Not as fast, admittedly, but purchasing new furniture items every few years can be harmful to the environment. This, added to the sheer amount of time we’ve all spent at home these past few years, we are all craving something a little more permanent.

We are beginning to see a shift back to embracing the wonderful world of craftsmanship. From detailed work on cabinetry and visible joinery on furniture to gorgeous fireplaces with hand-turned or -carved details, we’ve found attention to craftsmanship popping up everywhere.

Don’t worry, you won’t have to go and pull a Heidi Caillier (pictured below) and have your cabinets redone with intricate detail to bring this trend to life (though, if you’re interested, give us a call!) This trend comes in all shapes and sizes:

Store Bought: With companies like Crate and Barrel partnering with Shinola Detroit, you can bring the handcrafted look right from the catalog to your living room. Alternatively, seek out a local maker who can bring your exact vision to life.

DIY: If you are looking for something a little more "hands on”, let us point you in the direction of Lee Valley - they have incredible materials and resources for repurposing some of your existing pieces.

New to You: Lastly, and if you follow Common Purpose on Instagram you know what’s coming… Facebook Marketplace is a great resource for finding beautifully crafted furniture that just needs a little bit of love.

Lived In Luxury

After the last few years of hunkering down at home, I think we have all come to realize the importance of home and making it feel special. This year, you will see a shift towards emphasizing the finer things in our homes and showcasing our special pieces in the day-to-day.

One way to get this look is to use living materials - things like unlacquered brass or soft stones (like marble or soapstone), which will change with time and use.

Another method is to use what you’ve already got; Drink your daily smoothie in the nice glassware and serve dinner on the good china. Trust me it will instantly make you feel a little more luxurious with very little effort. If you’re not ready to incorporate your own special items into your every day, you can display them on a shelf or in a curio cabinet, or source new-to-you luxe items to use instead.

So! Let your candlesticks patina and your marble coffee table take in some everyday wear; Life and our treasures are meant for the living and we don’t have to be so precious all the time.

Art Deco Style

Art deco is making a comeback with its opulence and intrigue. This blast from the past is taking on a more modern approach and it is definitely here to stay, but beware, this trend needs a “less is more” approach.

We are seeing curves, geometric shapes, polished metals, and of course, the stepped profile being incorporated into homes and commercial spaces. That said, we don’t recommend running out and purchasing every metallic accessory you can get your hands on… If you want to bring this into your home, think intentionally and long term. You can incorporate art deco slowly but surely into your home with accent pieces like lighting, wallpaper and mirrors. These items are small but mighty ways to bring an Art Deco punch to your space.

Organic Shapes and Arches

Organic shapes have been around since, well, the dawn of time really. With this shift away from the less sterile and towards more liveable, organic shapes are really making a statement again and can be executed in so many ways.

You can achieve it architecturally with a barrel-ceilinged walkway or arched doors, sculpturally with vases and art, or even with your furniture - maybe a gorgeous voluminous sofa?

Not all organic shapes are for everyone - it is about making them work well for you. Don’t be afraid to start small by adding in an oblong accent mirror, or arching some doorways.

I know a lot of time all of us are stuck thinking in the past of old homes with arched niches or 70’s furniture that doesn’t quite look like furniture. If you apply the trend correctly though, these architectural and furniture elements can be timeless in your home.

Well, there you have it. A round up of a few trends that are catching our eye this year. Remember that trends will come and go, but what you truly love will always be in style. Unless its shag carpet, then you really should give us a call.
