Project Reveal: Charlton Charmer

We love a heritage home at Common Purpose, and were so thrilled to be asked to redesign this kitchen. The clients wanted a functional kitchen with ample storage, unfussy finishes, and a design that wouldn’t feel out of place in their old home. Most importantly, the space needed to feel like them - the oversaturated design styles we’ve seen emerge wouldn’t do.

We were able to maintain the trim leading into the room and around the large original window in the space, as well as the tall baseboards. The warm wood tones that are carried through the space complement the earthy colours found in the cabinetry and tile.

Honouring the history of this home, we didn’t remove any walls for open-concept living. Instead, we opted for a warm colour palette that draws you into the space. In order to keep this small space feeling light and airy, we painted the custom range hood in the same matte finish that you’ll find on the walls, which allows it to make an impact without making the room feel claustrophobic.

Tile was probably the hardest decision to make in this space. We wanted something that felt unique, would suit the age of the home, and wasn’t going to go out of style any time soon. When we took the clients to look at tile in the store, we weren’t finding anything that really hit the mark. That’s when we brought them to the pool tile area and admitted that it was a weird choice, that we’d been hesitating showing it to them, but ultimately thought it was a home run… and our clients agreed. So, we went with pool tile!

The flooring in the kitchen was previously a linoleum tile, and switched to a vinyl plank in the rear mud room. To create a more cohesive design and encourage flow, we carried the slate tile to the back door, which also helps the space feel larger. Now the clients have fewer transitions (and trip hazards!)
